The win was the Dragons sixth in their last seven games. They will try for their first series sweep of the 2013 season on Friday night after winning the first two games of the set.

      Jesse Winker belted a tie-breaking two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Dayton Dragons to a come-from-behind 6-4 victory over the West Michigan Whitecaps on Wednesday night. The win was the Dragons fifth in their last six games, three of which have been decided on Dragons late-inning home runs.

      On Thursday -- as Manchester City defeated Chelsea, 4-3, in a soccer exhibition at Busch Stadium -- focus turned to paying tribute to the victims of this week's tragic Oklahoma tornado. The Cardinals and Relevent Sports will donate one dollar for every ticket sold to the game, and both clubs will match the donation.
    • Guarded optimism surrounding Carp's rehab process
      The pair of February news conferences took on a tone of solemnity and reflection as general manager John Mozeliak and, a week later, Chris Carpenter, painted a picture void of optimism. Carpenter refused to utter the "R" word, but the idea of career finality was certainly palpable as he spoke.

      Southpaw Tyler Lyons became the latest Cardinals rookie to deliver on Wednesday night, turning in a dominant seven innings while making his Major League debut in a 5-3 win against the Padres at Petco Park.

    • Shoulder surgery to end Garcia's season
      Cardinals southpaw Jaime Garcia has a tear in his labrum that will require season-ending surgery on his left shoulder. The decision to have a procedure was made after Garcia was seen by Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Fla., on Wednesday.

      Double-A Tennessee will join outfielder Ty Wright in his efforts to raise funds for the victims. The Smokies will hold several events throughout the current homestand with proceeds going to the American Red Cross relief efforts for the Oklahoma tornado victims.
    • Jackson roughed up early, Cubs fall to Pirates
      Right-hander Edwin Jackson was limited to three innings before rain intervened and delayed the Cubs' game against the Pirates nearly two hours. Pittsburgh had scored all it needed by then, as Andrew McCutchen hit a pair of RBI singles to lead the Pirates to a 4-2 victory over Chicago at PNC Park on Thursday.
    • Mounting losses gnawing at Soriano
      If Cubs fans think it's tough to deal with the team's losses, it's even harder on the players. On Thursday, Alfonso Soriano was still bothered by Tuesday's 5-4 loss to the Pirates.
    • Cubs starters solid, but offense can't get key hits
      The Cubs are wasting good starting pitching and manager Dale Sveum said he may abandon his lineup platoon against left-handed starters to try and shake things up.
    • Cubs struggling against left-handed pitchers
      Entering Thursday, the Cubs had a .232 batting average against left-handed pitchers, and they are 4-10 when a southpaw starts against them. They can watch video, but there is only one left-handed batting practice option in bullpen coach Lester Strode.

      The Pirates beat the Cubs, 4-2, to complete a three-game sweep of Chicago on Thursday at PNC Park after a 1-hour, 47-minute rain delay, which began with two outs in the top of the fourth inning.
    • Alvarez shows improvement at third base
      Pedro Alvarez's play in the field has been criticized in the past, but Wednesday night, he made three great stops on hard hit groundballs to his left. And while the Pirates did make two errors in their 1-0 win, manager Clint Hurdle said they probably saved five hits with stellar defense, several by their third baseman.
    • Pirates showing mettle in close games
      The Pirates aren't letting down late in games. They are tied with Atlanta and Texas for the most comeback wins in the Majors with 14. Day by day, they're getting battle tested.
    • Veterans bring winning attitude to Pirates
      Homegrown Pirates haven't experienced long-term success over the course of the 162-game grind that is a Major League season. But a few veterans, like Brandon Inge, Russell Martin and A.J. Burnett, have, and it's rubbing off in the clubhouse.

      "Million Dollar Arm" is the next big baseball movie, it and began shooting this month in Mumbai, India.
